The Living Room Before
Before the makeover, the walls were painted Sherwin-Williams Perfect Greige, and our living room still leaned heavily toward the farmhouse style I used to love. The warmer wall color, lighter fireplace and built-ins, and surrounding decor no longer reflected the direction I wanted for our home. The fireplace blended into the room instead of feeling like a focal point, while the hutch added more visual weight than the space needed. Nothing was necessarily wrong with the room—it simply felt like an earlier version of my style. I wanted it to feel brighter, calmer, less cluttered, and more connected to the modern organic look I’ve been bringing into the rest of our house.
Choosing a Rug to Soften the Room
The rug from World Market helped bring the entire room together. I wanted something that would soften the dark fireplace wall, complement the lighter Blizzard Fog walls, and add warmth and texture without making the room feel busy. Its neutral colors created a relaxed foundation for the furniture and helped give the living room the layered, comfortable feeling I associate with modern organic interiors. It was also one of those pieces that confirmed I didn’t need to replace everything—the right rug could make our existing furniture feel completely different.
Adding Warmth with World Market Finds
Several of the finishing pieces in this room came from World Market, including the rug, green knot pillow, and wooden people figurine displayed on the bottom shelf. The rug softened the dark fireplace wall and added texture without making the room feel busy, while the green knot pillow brought in a playful touch of color. I love the warmth and personality of the wooden figurine, especially against the Iron Ore shelves. Together, these pieces helped give the living room the relaxed, collected feeling I associate with modern organic interiors.
Making the Room Feel More Open
Another important change was moving the hutch out of the living room and into the dining room. I still loved the piece, but it added more visual weight than the living room needed and worked much better in its new location. Removing it gave the space more breathing room and allowed the fireplace wall to stand on its own. This was a good reminder that a room makeover doesn’t always require buying something new—sometimes moving a piece to a better location can completely change how both rooms feel.
The finished living room feels brighter, calmer, and much more like us. Valspar Blizzard Fog creates a soft backdrop and connects the room to the rest of our house, while the Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore fireplace adds the contrast and character the space was missing. The aged bronze hardware, textured rug, and collected decor bring warmth back into the room and keep the darker focal wall from feeling too heavy.
What I love most is that we didn’t have to replace all of our furniture or change the layout to make the room feel completely different. Paint made the biggest impact, while a few thoughtful updates helped everything else fall into place. The room now feels less farmhouse, more modern organic, and much closer to the relaxed California-cool style I’ve been working toward throughout our home.
The Finished Room
There are still little things I may change over time—and knowing me, I probably will—but this makeover gave our living room the fresh start it needed. It feels lighter, warmer, and much more connected to the rest of our home. Sometimes you don’t need a complete renovation to fall in love with a room again. A new paint color, a stronger focal point, and a few meaningful pieces can make all the difference. After all, sometimes changing your mind is exactly what makes a space finally feel like home.
